Aspectos anatômicos e funcionais do aparelho reprodutor de Parastacus brasiliensis (von Martens) (Crustacea, Decapoda, Parastacidae) Zoologia
Almeida,Alexandre Oliveira de; Buckup,Ludwig.
The absence of morphological external characteristics that allow the recognition of the sex as well as the presence of both male and female gonopores in the same animal [except in some sexual forms of Parastacus nicoleti (Philippi, 1882)] gives rise to the hypothetical existence of some form of hermaphroditism in crayfishes belonging to the genus Parastacus Huxley, 1879. Specimens of Parastacus brasiliensis (von Martens, 1869) were collected in a rivulet at Mariana Pimentel municipality, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. In the laboratory they were reared and dissected. The results suggest that P. brasiliensis may be a sequential hermaphroditic species, but male and female gonadal tissues were not simultaneously present in the analized samples. In testes and...

First record of a male of Kryptolebias hermaphroditus Costa, 2011 (Cyprinodontiformes: Cynolebiidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Berbel-Filho,Waldir M.; Espírito-Santo,Helder M. V.; Lima,Sergio M. Q..
ABSTRACT During an ichthyological survey in September 2015 at the Ceará-Mirim River estuary, Rio Grande do Norte State, northeastern Brazil, we collected a male of Kryptolebias hermaphroditus , a cynolebiid species that had been previously described as containing exclusively self-fertilizing hermaphrodites. This is the first record of a male in this species, over 140 years after the discovery of the mangrove rivulid species from Brazil. Our discovery reinforces the need for more studies in K. hermaphroditus , as well as the potential of this species as a model for evolutionary studies due to its unique mating system.

Gonocorismo en la vieira patagonica Zygochlamys patagonica (King y Broderip, 1832) en el Banco Reclutas, Argentina OceanDocs
Campodónico, S.; Macchi, G.J.; Lasta, M.L..
Different cases of hermaphroditism in Zygochlamys patagonica were described through histological analysis. Samples were collected in Reclutas Bed. Argentine Sea, SW Atlantic. The hermaphroditism incidence was 0.14. . Thus, the protandric hermaphroditism hypothesis previously suggested by some autors was discarded.

Growing knowledge and understanding of dichromatism and sex reversal in Labridae Naturalis
Roede, Machteld J..
A brief survey is given of current literature in comparison with former studies. Since the 18th century phenotypic diversity of Labridae is a matter of argument. At first in dribs and drabs, yet last decades at a rapid rate, dichromatic adult morphs are synonymized. There are few monochromatic species. Wrasses are protogynous hermaphrodites. Most species are described as monandric, but a minority (of slightly or extremely dichromatic) species is diandric, with both primary and secondary males. Terminal males reproduce with single females, but initial phase males spawn in aggregations. Some species are haremic, and large males are permanently or temporarily territorial. Last decades insight in the various social factors has greatly increased, resulting in...

Hermaphroditism in Marine Mussel Perumytilus purpuratus (Lamarck, 1819), (Mollusca: Mytilidae) International Journal of Morphology
Montenegro Villalobos,Diana; Olivares Paz,Alberto; González,María Teresa.
Marine bivalves are essentially gonochoric species. However, some occasional hermaphrodites specimens can be found. A histological description of two (among 179) hermaphrodites of the marine mussel Perumytilus purpuratus (Lamarck, 1819) that were collected in San Jorge Bay (24S) is given. The low proportion of hermaphrodites suggests that P. purpuratus hermaphroditism could be an accidental phenomenon; nevertheless other causes are also discussed in the present study.

Hermaphroditism of bivalves Anadara tuberculosa and Anadara similis Sowerby 1883 (Arcidae) in Colombian Pacific mangroves Boletín de Investigaciones
Lucero Rincon,Carlos H.; Cantera Kintz,Jaime R.; Gil-Agudelo,Diego L..
ABSTRACT The hermaphrodite condition of the cockles Anadara tuberculosa and Anadara similis, gonochoric species living in mangroves of the Pacific coast of Colombia, are described in this paper. The gonads of 290 individuals of A. tuberculosa and 336 individuals of A. similis collected in five localities of the Colombian Pacific coast were analyzed using histological methods. Our results exposed that 3.1 % of A. tuberculosa and 3.0 % of A. similis analyzed showed signs of both ovules and spermatozoids, as well as simultaneous sexual maturation. Based on this frequency of occurrence of hermaphrodite individuals and the fact that hermaphrodite organisms were present in most of the sampling sites, we conclude that hermaphroditism is a normal rather than...

Le déterminisme du sexe de l’huître creuse Crassostrea gigas au cours de son développement et du cycle gamétogénétique adulte : recherche de déterminants moléculaires ArchiMer
Naimi, Amine.
The pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas is a successive protandric irregular hermaphrodite. The factors involved in the first gonadic differentiation in juveniles and those involved in sex reversal in adults are still unknown. This thesis consisted in the identification of molecular factors of the oyster’s gonadic differentiation during its adult cycle and its development. Thus, the respective orthologs to a DM-family factor and to Foxl2, Cg-DMl and Cg-Foxl2, have been characterized in the oyster by RT-PCR. Their study by real-time PCR, in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry, has highlighted a ubiquitous expression of Cg-DMl in potentially proliferating / differentiating cells in the gonads of both sexes. The Cg-Foxl2 expression is specific to the...

Le déterminisme sexuel de l'huître crassostrea gigas : du phénotype aux facteurs moléculaires sous-jacents ArchiMer
Broquard, Coralie.
Knowledge about the mode of reproduction and the sex determination of the cupped oyster Crassostrea gigas remains limited. As a sequential hermaphroditic species, sex determination takes place several times during its lifetime. As part of this thesis, the sexual phenotypes of the first 6 years of life of oysters were identified in two cohorts. Thus, the sex ratio was biased towards females from the first sexual maturity, as well as for all subsequent years. After six years of sexing, 42%, 32%, 19%, 5%, 1% and 0.1% of oysters showed 0, 1, 2, 2, 3, 4 and 5 sex changes. The frequency of sex changes also decreased with age (34% between years 1-2 to 9% between years 5-6). This thesis work has also sought to determine the influence of sex and sex change on the...

Sex determination in the oyster Crassostrea gigas - A large longitudinal study of population sex ratios and individual sex changes ArchiMer
Broquard, Coralie; Martinez, Anne-sophie; Maurouard, Elise; Lamy, Jean-baptiste; Dégremont, Lionel.
Understanding sex determination in the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas, a sequential hermaphrodite, can provide prospective on the evolution of sex-determining systems for comparative reproduction from an evolutionary perspective. Surprisingly, this mechanism is still poorly understood. To date, sex ratio and sex change have never been studied at the individual level for a large size group and long-term monitoring. To this purpose, we performed an ambitious individual long-term follow-up (6 years) on a large population (cohort 1: 7488 oysters) produced from wild oysters, as well as for a second population produced from the cohort 1 (cohort 2: 4320 oysters). All oysters were individually sexed from 2014 to 2019. For the cohort 1, our results showed a...
